Silent Fans Do The Work For You
Article Body:
Mold is an inevitable challenge of indoor living. That can be a problem, because exposure can cause allergic reactions, asthma, nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing or skin irritation. If you have a mold problem in your home, the only way to control its growth is to control moisture. Here are some things you can do to control mold growth in your home:
• Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
• Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24 hours to prevent mold growth.
• Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent and dry completely.
• Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (such as windows, piping, exterior walls, roof or floors) by adding insulation.
• Absorbent materials, such as ceiling tiles, that are moldy, may need to be replaced.
• Don't carpet areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, such as around sinks.
• Reduce indoor humidity to less than 60 percent to decrease mold growth. Vent bathrooms, dryers and other moisture-generating sources to the outside with a ventilation fan.
A humidity-sensing fan is the perfect solution for proper ventilation. Broan's new Ultra Silent Humidity Sensing fans are automatic-once there is a rapid rise in humidity, the fan automatically turns on to exhaust excess moisture and turns off once the job is done. They're also quiet, making less noise than even a quiet refrigerator.
Energy Star-qualified, the fans use 65 percent less energy, on average, than standard models. The humidity-sensing fan uses Sensaire technology to detect a rapid increase in humidity at the ceiling, where it's most prevalent, unlike humidistats, which only detect simple humidity. This feature makes the humidity-sensing fan more effective at protecting a bathroom from mold and mildew.
Now it's easy to control mold and moisture in the home.
Show Off That Awesome Plasma TV with the Perfect Stand
Article Body:
Plasma TVs are one of the hottest electronic items being sold today. They are somewhat of a financial investment so whether you’re planning on creating an entire home theatre system for your family or just want a nice way to show off your new TV, a plasma TV stand is an excellent idea. Here’s a few different types of TV stands and cabinets to assist you with your decision making.
Metal Plasma TV Stands
Metal plasma TV stands are modern and stylish and come in different finishes like black or silver. A nice feature of these types of stands is that in some circumstances, the metal is even textured with a powder coat finish to hide fingerprints. They are also very sturdy and easy to assemble. Some manufacturers even give you of choice of features such as glass shelving and magnetized trims in different types of wood finishes.
Console Styles
Consider a console plasma TV stand in your choice of contemporary or elegant wood and metal finishes. Consoles are great because accessories like tapes and DVDs can be stored inside them, out of sight. They also help to ‘hide’ wires and components because the front is covered by the cabinet doors. These aren’t the bulky TV consoles from the ‘old days’ either. Their designs are streamlined and modern and in addition to their functionality, can add a really nice touch to your existing décor.
Designer Style
These types of plasma TV stands come in wide variety of styles and can really add an additional degree of drama to a room. Choose from wood or metal in different finishes and then mix it up with shelving choices in different materials than the base. An all glass stand is a great way to give the illusion of more space in smaller rooms and you can select from clear, frosted or beveled. These stands are also very sturdy and what’s nice about the open style of these types of TV stands is that all of your components are easily accessible. Many also include a swivel turntable so you can easily adjust your TV for different viewers around the room.
Stands with Motorized TV Lifts
Automatic TV lifts are built into the cabinet and designed to raise heavy plasma TVs. They use four rails to guide the unit as motor raises the lift quickly, quietly and safely. Some models will even stop automatically if something obstructs its path in the same way an automatic garage door mechanism works. These are pretty cool but are actually more of a furniture piece so you’ll need to make sure you have the space if this is your choice for a plasma TV stand.

Scuba Gear
Article Body:
Scuba (Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) diving and its various equipment have gone a long way. It began in 360 B.C. when divers first used the air underneath a crude diving bell as their source of air when submerged in the water. Guglielmo de Lorena then developed this “technology” into a real diving bell that was fastened by slings on top of the shoulders. In the past, it took hundreds of years to develop the equipment that enabled man to explore the wonders of the underwater world.
Today, with modern science, every diver finds himself engulfed with newer tools, proof of man’s eagerness to make underwater exploration easier and more secure. Newer and better equipment like masks, dry and wet suits, fins, lights, oxygen tanks, weights, regulators, bags, buoyancy compensators and other accessories are easily available today. Each has been designed to make moving, swimming, and breathing easier.
In purchasing equipment, the most important advice to remember is to ask experts on what to buy and why. Diving gears can be expensive, so, a few tips from other licensed divers and instructors would make the task of choosing less of a burden. But, on the other hand, the risks of the sport are often fatal and would depend on the quality of one’s equipment. Take the breathing regulator for example. The machine is attached to the scuba tank. It decreases the pressure of the oxygen stored in the tank, making safe for the divers to breathe in the air. Another example is the wet suit. The durability and the strength of material ensure the body’s protection from intense temperatures, specifically the coldness under the depths of the ocean.
No matter what the sport, the most important consideration that should be taken, is one’s safety and freedom to fully enjoy the activity.

Rock Speakers and Planters
Article Body:
I think today wherever there's a human being, there's a pair of speakers. Perhaps you can't imagine your living without your home theater system. In the bedroom, you still want to listen to your favorite Cd's. The shortest car ride is unbearable without a decent stereo and a pair of speakers. Newly, this goes for boat rides, too. The more recent wireless technology allows you to have speakers in the garden, in the garage or wherever you have things to do.
But loudspeaker manufacturers don't settle for this, when it comes to outdoor use. They want speakers that black out and melt into the environment. They want 100% weatherproof. They want naturalistic design. And the answer to all their wishes has materialized itself into the planter and rock speakers.
The biggest rocks in this field are Stereostone, Rockustics and SpeakerCraft. When it comes to rocking and rolling stones they can make all your wishes come true. Just try them by sending over a piece of rock from your garden. They'll send back the design of a prototype speaker that looks exactly like your rock.
How to recognize a rock speaker
If you are in a friend's garden, music is all around but you don't know where it comes from, be sure that the speakers are hiding in the form of some rocks or flower pots. These speakers are especially designed for outdoor use, which means that they are 100% weatherproof. They are completely sealed, using insulating materials that are made to hold up in extreme weather conditions.
In aspect, both Rockustics and Stereostone speakers got inspired from mother nature. They have that grainy look, irregular shape of natural rocks, heavy appearance heavy, but are entirely made of light, synthetic, materials. Most buying guides recommend looking for speakers that are made of good weatherproof materials like: coated aluminum, stainless steel, polypropylene.
Do rock speakers really rock?
They sure do! What we like most about these speakers is how you can use them to impress your kids. Flower pots that sing and rocks that tell stories, this is as close as technology can get to a fairy tale.
If you have doubts about their performance level, don't. Of course, they can't compete by far with the audio quality of a high performing audio system or to the home theater experience. But they sound pretty well. Rock speakers and planters are meant to please the ear while they don't bug the eye. The major advantage is they come close to you, and you don't have to play them that loud. This way you won't keep the neighbors up at night just because you are giving a back yard party.
The major drawback? Though they are designed mostly for outdoor use, they're all wired. But this inconvenient can be solved through a few placement tricks.
Placement tips
Unless you plan to use your rock speakers as wasp nests or rain gauges, you should use a few tricks when mounting them:
- Choose a drier place to place them.
- Don't point the port upward.
- Place the speaker near the place you are to sit more often; In open air, there's less reflection and speakers may sound weaker.
- Measure the area you want the speakers to cover, preferable before you buy them. A pair usually covers 200 to 400 sq. ft.
- Usually, 16- or 18-gauge wire is good; for runs over 80 feet, choose 14-gauge wire.
- No matter the brand, use direct-burial cable to connect the speakers, because it resists the underground moisture and oxidation.
Planter and rock speaker manufacturers
Planter and rock speakers definitely can bring a dose of exoticism in your backyard. Here are some brands worth your consideration:
Rockustics
These are the guys that make your garden rock. Their garden series includes both rock and planter speakers. The Rocky III speaker looks like a stone on the back but like a Flintstones tool on the front. The sound quality and the bass response are good, even when compared with normal speakers. If you are willing to give away a larger sum, in order to enjoy a real bass experience, also buy one of the subwoofer models. Their base can be buried in the ground and a smaller part remains visible.
All Rockustics products have a lifetime warranty (their lifetime, not yours). All the speakers are designed for outdoor use. As previously mentioned, Rockustics can create custom colored-speakers, available by special request.
Stereostone
A Stereostone unit is a complete speaker on its own. Stereostone also offers models of aboveground subwoofers. The Gibraltar Rock is probably the most impressive rock speaker from Stereostone, both in size and performance. With an 8-inch woofer, its bass is quite pleasing. It can be of use in your personal garden, but also in theme parks or other public spaces.
SpeakerCraft
It's probably even more difficult to tell which ones are rocks and which ones are speakers if you go for the Rox speakers from SpeakerCraft. The grille texture that hides the speaker is so fine that you almost don't notice the difference. To build the speaker enclosure, the company developed a special blend of weatherproof resins. No matter how astonishing this stone similarity is, you may want to look for a little diversity in the garden patio. Webster the Frog is waiting for you. It is not a real frog, but a speaker in disguise from Bahama Sounds, a SpeakerCraft division located in Riverside, California.

Recharging Cell Phone & Camcorder Batteries
Article Body:
If you are a cell phone customer, then you should also have a battery charger. The majority of cell phones are accompanied by an AC adapter, which plugs directly into your cell phone and also into a standard electrical outlet for recharging. Depending on the type of phone, it may take up to 24 hours for the battery to fully recharge. But, what happens when you are on the road and your cell phone’s battery runs out? What will you do if there is no nearby electrical outlet to help recharge your phone? In this situation, the best accessory that you could own is a cable that allows you to connect your cell phone into the vehicle’s cigarette lighter slot for instant use and recharging. With this method, you can use your cell phone immediately or allow it to recharge if you see that the battery is low.
When it comes to battery recharging, it is best to keep all connectors with you wherever you go. If you own a device that allows your cell phone to connect to your vehicle, carry it in a purse or place it in the glove box for easy access. There is nothing worse than having car trouble in the middle of nowhere and being stranded without any contact to civilization. By making sure that your cell phone battery is fully charged and/or by having a recharging cord for your automobile, you will always have the peace of mind in knowing that help is just a phone call away.
If you are planning a vacation or business trip via commuter train, you will find that you can recharge your cell phone in one of the plug-ins next to your seat. Because the majority of passenger trains feature an electrical outlet next to the seats, recharging your cell phone’s battery will be a breeze. When traveling this way, also be sure to pack the recharging device for an automobile, which you can use in a rental car when you arrive at your destination.
The approach for recharging camcorders is much the same. The only exception is that these units cannot be charged in an automobile, but instead must be recharged at home using an electrical outlet and an AC adapter. The convenience in charging your camcorder batteries is being able to comfortably use the device without worrying about it running down in the middle of a graduation, wedding ceremony or other special event that you happen to be recording. Prior to setting out to record a special event, make sure that your camcorder battery is fully charged and working properly.
Rear Projection LCD TV
Article Body:
The least expensive type of large TV is a rear-projection LCD TV. Some projection TVs have three cathode-ray picture tubes (CRTs), which are like smaller versions of the tubes used in conventional sets. The images from those small tubes are projected onto the back of a 40 inch to 60 inch plus screen, giving them the name rear projection TV. Other rear projection TV sets use LCD, digital light processing (DLP), or liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) technology in place of CRTs. These high tech rear projection TV sets are thinner, lighter, and as a result more expensive than comparable CRT-based sets – but they produce a higher-quality picture.
Major brands of rear projection LCD TV sets include Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Philips, RCA, Samsung, Sony, and Toshiba. The most popular models are HD capable, and there are three basic types of HD TVs.
So how do you choose the right rear projection LCD TV for you and your viewing needs?
First, consider the space you have available before you worry about the screen size itself. Most rear projection LCD TVs have screens measuring from 42 to well over 60 inches. You might be tempted to purchase one of the biggest screens, which can span as much as 70 inches or more, but first determine how much floor space you can spare, and plan to view the TV from around 7 to 10 feet away for optimal picture quality.
Also consider depth and price. Once you know how much room you have, decide whether size or price is more important. CRT-based sets are floor-standing models with deep cabinets mounted on casters. Some take up as much space as an armchair or loveseat. Many rear projection LCD TV sets are tabletop units, or you can buy a separate stand for a few hundred dollars.
Then focus on picture quality. The best rear projection LCD TV sets deliver very good picture quality with HD content and good picture quality for DVDs and regular TV programming. Rear projection LCD TV screens provide much better picture quality than CRT models.
Also check the viewing angle. Some rear projection LCD TV sets display a better image from off-center than older sets did, which is important if your TV will be watched by several people at the same time. Before buying a particular model, see how the picture looks if you step off to the side or move up and down. With some rear projection LCD TV sets you'll see a dimmer, washed-out image as your viewing position angles away.
Once you’ve made your choice, it pays to think about whether you want an extended warranty on your rear projection LCD TV. While extended warranties may not be worth it for most products, they may be for high-priced TVs. Because rear projection LCD TV sets are expensive, check into the cost of a service plan. Find out whether in-home service is covered and whether a replacement is provided if your rear projection LCD TV can't be repaired.
Readying Your Air-Conditioning System For A Hot Summer
Article Body:
Keeping your cool this year may be easier if you give your air-conditioning system a tune-up before the weather gets any warmer. All it takes is a few simple steps to make sure your air-conditioning system is ready to properly cool your home.
Here are some tips from the U.S. Department of Energy and the experts at Coleman® Heating and Air Conditioning, a brand of the Unitary Products Group of York--a Johnson Controls Company:
• Keeping the cool air inside is just as important as keeping the warm air outside. Caulking, weather stripping, and adding additional attic insulation will help keep cool air inside during the summer.
• Make sure the air is flowing properly through the vents. Inspect the ductwork for holes or separated joints, and hire a professional to repair them.
• Add insulation around air-conditioning ducts, when they are located in unconditioned spaces, such as attics, crawl spaces and garages; do the same for whole house fans where they open to the exterior or attic.
• Homeowners should check the SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) rating of their air-conditioning unit. The higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficient the unit is and the lower your utility bills will be. Upgrading to a higher SEER rating can save homeowners hundreds of dollars a year on their energy bills.
If the air-conditioning unit needs to be replaced, homeowners should be aware of the U.S. Department of Energy legislation that requires all new, central air-conditioning units manufactured after January 23, 2006, to have a SEER of at least 13.
Consumers may want to consider an energy-efficient model, such as the Coleman Echelon™ 15+ SEER air conditioner. New models are Energy Star® qualified, use environmentally friendly refrigerant and have high-efficiency scroll compressors that enhance reliability and contribute to the extremely quiet operation of the units.
Razor Batteries
Article Body:
What’s available, and how to keep it new
Electric razors are a wonderful invention, but can be quite costly. It is important to know how to keep you razor in good condition so it will last a long time and will save you the expense of purchasing a new one. The right type of razor battery and the right type of charger can help to maintain an electric razor and save money in the long run.
There are several familiar brands that make some great electric razors. Braun, Remington, and Norelco all have very good electric razors. Norelco’s new razors have a jet clean and charge system, an all in one set up that helps maintain the quality of the razor. Remington razors have titanium, self-sharpening blades that help maintain the best performance. The Braun razors also boast a cleaning system, and a special design that captures more hair than ever.
Razors typically use an Nickel Metal Hydride or NiMH battery. NiMH is a newer technology in portable appliance batteries that holds twice the capacity of its traditional counterpart. NiMH batteries do not suffer from the memory effect. They are also more environmentally friendly because they do not contain heavy metals. The batteries are usually not that expensive, around $10 to $20, which is much better than purchasing a new razor for $100 or more.
Since the NiMH batteries do not suffer from the memory effect, charging is not as much of an issue. With most razors, you simply just place it on the charger after use and do not think about it again.
Protect your investment, take care of your razor, and buy the best razor batteries. It will help your razor maintain performance for years to come.
Protect Your Home or Business with CCTV Security Systems
Article Body:
With so many reports of burglary, theft, and home invasions recently, you're probably very concerned about the safety of your home or business. There is a definite need for concern. Many homes or businesses are burglarized because they do not have a dependable security system in place.
CCTV security systems are growing in popularity for all sorts of purposes. As the need for security cameras grows, CCTV technology is also growing by leaps and bounds with new innovative features to make video surveillance more dependable than ever.
What is CCTV?
CCTV stands for "closed circuit television" and is a television system that is meant for private use only, not for public broadcast. CCTV is used for many purposes. It might be used to monitor a nanny or a caregiver for an elderly person. As an employer, you might use it to keep an eye on your employees and to monitor daily operations. CCTV can be used to observe public places by government or law officials such as parks, housing or apartment developments, and car parking garages.
Protection and Prevention with CCTV Security Systems
Using a CCTV system can dramatically reduce your risks of becoming a victim of crime. It can protect your child, your elderly loved one, your home, or your business by allowing you to observe what's going on either secretly or openly. A CCTV camera can be placed almost anywhere in any room where sufficient lighting is available. Many of the new model CCTV cameras are wireless and can be operated on batteries. There are external day/night cameras as well for surveillance outdoors.
Types of CCTV Surveillance Cameras
There are many different types of CCTV security systems available. If you want a "hidden" camera, there are miniature cameras and even CCTV cameras that resemble everyday objects, such as the pen camera, smoke alarm camera, and the clock camera. These objects appear to be normal, but actually have a CCTV camera hidden inside. There are covert wireless cameras, multiple cameras with receivers for observing a broad area, dome-covered wireless cameras, and wireless video senders.
Benefits of a DVR Security System
A DVR security system is a digital video recorder that can be used in concordance with the CCTV system. Unlike VCRs, DVRs enable you to record for many hours at the full digital quality. Also, you are able to set it for timed recordings or continuous recordings. Some unique features that you might find with a DVR system include quick replay search using date, time, or day, multiple camera recordings and display, a CD writer for backup, motion detection, remote control, and more.
With these helpful surveillance items, you can feel safe and secure at your home or business. They can be used as a deterrent to thieves or to catch them in the act. There are also other great security products for creating access control to certain areas of your home or business, vehicle security, computer and Internet security, and other uses.
Use online resources to find the right CCTV security system for your home or business. You won't regret it!

They provide a strong and clean power source that helps batteries to last longer and be more effective in deep cycle start ups. There are 12v or 6v batteries depending on the type of equipment.
Optima’s Spiral sealed acid technology is a great and safe alternative in battery technology. When the battery is purchased it may be shipped normally, and there is no need to add electrolyte. Optima batteries are also safer than “spillable” batteries because they can be placed in any manner as opposed to being kept upright.
The Optima is truly an all around low maintenance battery. Beyond the fact it requires no activation, it is also composed of the best corrosion free components. Optima batteries also withstand higher temperatures, which allows them to last longer than traditional batteries. And the safety and functionality of the Optima battery is available for all types of machinery, whether it is auto, marine, or truck.
Odyssey Batteries and the Odyssey Optimizer
Article Body:
Odyssey batteries are high performance batteries for anyone interested in any type of high speed motorized sporting. One brand has surpassed the rest in offering high performance batteries, and that is Odyssey.
Odyssey, which claims to be the Extreme Battery, offers batteries for motorcycles, ATVs, utility vehicles, and personal watercraft such as jet skis. Odyssey batteries are military grade and can withstand the abuse that comes from high speed motorized sports. While most batteries will succumb to vibration and mechanical abuse, Odyssey batteries do not.
Odyssey batteries are the original rechargeable battery containing lead acid. However, these batteries are sealed so they avoid spilling which is a hazard in traditional “spillable” lead-acid batteries. They are also referred to as sealed-MF, or maintenance free, because they are shipped fully charged and do not require activation.
Odyssey has developed its own tester and charger to ensure the proper maintenance of their batteries. Known as the Odyssey Optimizer, this charger and tester is one of the best of the market for sealed lead-acid batteries. The type of charger required depends greatly on how the motorized sporting equipment is used. If the battery must be discharged rapidly and then recharged rapidly, this requires a different charger than if the battery must stay at a high state of charge with multiple starts and stops.
Odyssey batteries are the way to for anyone involved in motorized sporting. These types of batteries hold all the advantages over their rechargeable counterparts. Though the price can vary greatly, it is well worth the investment to have a reliable and powerful battery.

LCD Versus Plasma - Which One is Best?
Article Body:
A new television is high on everyone's wish list. Who wouldn't love a brand new fifty-inch flat screen TV hanging on their living room wall? The makers of televisions are taking advantage of ever-changing technology by creating scientific marvels that can produce clear pictures and lifelike colors in just a few inches of depth. But all of this technology means that buying a TV is harder than ever. These days, the battle between LCD and plasma is on, and choosing sides can be hard. Which one should you purchase?
Why buy a plasma TV?
Plasma TV's have a wide viewing angle. This means that the person sitting to the side of the television can enjoy the same picture quality as the person sitting in front of the television. With an LCD, the picture quality diminishes if viewed from an angle. If you plan on mounting your TV high on a wall or above a fireplace, a plasma is your best bet, since the picture will remain clear when viewed from the ground. Plasma TV's are known for having high contrast and deep black levels. This is most evident in nighttime scenes in movies and shows; the colors appear lifelike and every detail shows, even in dark scenes. Plasma TV's are also less expensive than LCD's. When the price per inch is compared, plasma TV's are a budget's best friend.
Why buy an LCD?
If you are looking to reduce your monthly electricity bills, you will want to purchase an LCD TV. The savings are minimal - often just a few dollars a month - but will add up over the lifetime of the television. And since an LCD TV uses less electricity, it is the greener option. You might also want to purchase an LCD if someone in your family is an avid video gamer. Video games often feature static images, like the score box or the countdown timer, that do not move. With a plasma TV, these static images can burn into the screen; this burn-in is not a problem with an LCD. You also need to consider the level of light in the room. LCD's are well suited to bright rooms. The screen is less reflective than a plasma, and as such will not show the reflections of windows or lights. Also, LCD's have a brighter picture; under the harsh glow of daylight or lamplight, viewers will still see a clear and bright picture on the screen.
In a battle between plasma and LCD, there is no clear winner. You should buy whichever television best suits your needs. But before purchasing a TV, you need to remember some key rules. First, match the size of the television to the size of the room; contrary to popular belief, the television should not be larger than the room itself. Second, shop around. Prices for both plasma and LCD TV's are coming down by the day, so you might find a bargain if you do a little comparison shopping. And third, if you are technically challenged, hire someone to install the electrical components for you. This way, you can sit back and enjoy your favorite show with all of your fingers intact.
Kodak CX7300 Digital Camera
Article Body:
Quality digital cameras are becoming affordable for just about everyone these days. Kodak's entry into the low cost end of the market is their CX7300 3.2 mega pixel model. You just may be surprised at what a terrific value it is. Please read on.
As recently as two years ago, if you were shopping for a 3.0 mega pixel or greater camera, you would have paid approximately $249. for one. Today, prices have tumbled and it isn't uncommon to find cameras in this category going for $150 or less. Recents sale prices I have observed have brought this price down further with one retailer selling the Kodak CX7300 for just under $100.
As you may know a 3.0 meg camera is ideal if you are taking pictures to post online. Anything greater isn't necessary, so there is no need to expend the extra bucks for a 5.0, 6.0, or even 7.0 meg camera.
This particular Kodak model is no bare bones model either. Top features include:
3.2 million pixels
3x digital zoom
1.6" color display
Red eye reduction
Self timer
Color modes
Multiple scene modes
Movie mode
16 MB internal memory
Easy Share software
The CX7300 is easy to use and picture quality is very good. Kodak also markets this model camera as a C300, so shop around and see what your retailer is offering.
Kitchen Lighting: Factors To Remember
Article Body:
Importance of a well lit kitchen
Kitchen Lighting is often the most over-looked aspect while designing the kitchen. In fact, a well lit kitchen is paramount in order to create the right mood, cook faster and function more efficiently. Moreover, the kitchen just does not serve as a cooking area but in most cases also as a dining and entertaining room. A well lit kitchen also obviates the risk of accidents and a well lit kitchen is always welcoming. A few factors need to be taken into account when designing the kitchen lighting. Rather than just focusing on the fancy fixtures that blend well with the kitchen décor; it is equally important to take its functionality into account. So, first set yourself a reasonable budget before going ahead with the lighting plan.
Eliminate errors and analyze the kitchen size
It is never a good idea to just install a single glaring bulb in the middle of the ceiling. Too much or too little lighting in kitchen areas will result in an imbalance which may visually overpower certain areas and create shadows in other areas. There are essentially 3 types of kitchen lighting: Task Lighting, Ambient Lighting and Accent Lighting. A balanced blend of all three creates a well lit kitchen. Therefore, a careful analysis of the kitchen size is essential to determine the kind of fixtures and lighting required in different kitchen areas. Be subtle and make sure you don’t overdo it. A well lit kitchen need not necessarily be glaring bulbs all over. The key is to blend and mix the right type of lighting (Task, Ambient and Accent) at strategic areas to improve functionality and enhance the mood of the kitchen.
Carefully create a balanced blend and go for a layered look
Task Lighting
Task Lighting is a directed beam of light that illuminates the work areas of the kitchen. Each work area of the kitchen requires its own task lighting. Be it chopping vegetables, mixing and measuring ingredients; everything requires separate task lighting. Every designated area should ideally have its own task lighting. Under cabinets lights too are a great option to install task lighting as besides offering great functionality; it can significantly enhance and emphasize the features of the kitchen. While fluorescents prove to highly energy efficient, halogens produce a clear white glow. Proper task lighting can prevent kitchen accidents as well. The island tops and kitchen counters need to be well illuminated with task lighting. On the other hand, a poorly lit counter may produce shadows and hinder or delay one’s activity.
Ambient Lighting:
As the term suggests, ambient lighting creates a welcoming ambience and creates the general feel and look of the room. It serves as a functional lighting and aids in maneuvering and moving around the kitchen safely. If the kitchen cabinets are built or placed half way through the ceiling; the extra space can serve as an ideal spot for ambient lighting. In most cases; the ambient lighting is most neglected and overlooked. This type of lighting should be well blended with other lighting.
Accent Lighting:
Accent Lighting is generally used to emphasize the architectural features of the kitchen as well as lend the ideal dimension and depth to a kitchen. The fixtures placed inside cabinets which have a glass front to illuminate the cabinet items like China and glassware may constitute Accent Lighting. Even over cabinet lighting or recess lighting accentuates the feel good factors of a kitchen. Track lighting can also be considered if the home owner has a small galley kitchen.
Dimmers:
Installing dimmers is a significant factor that needs to be taken into account for kitchen lighting. With dimmers, the lights can be dimmed or undimmed according to the activity taking place in the kitchen or the time of the day. Moreover; dimmers create the right balance required in kitchen lighting. However; just installing one stray dimmer may not be enough. Separate dimmers for each lighting type would be ideal: Accent, Task and Ambient. The idea is to be able to adjust the lighting; as and when needed.
Research, Plan and then Implement
Planning ahead can save the homemaker a few dollars as well as get the right lighting effect within a stipulated budget. A lighting designer may also be very helpful in delivering the required effects as he would first carefully study the kitchen layout (such as natural light, ceiling height, finishing of the surface etc) and design the lighting accordingly. Also, do your homework and a good amount of research in advance. Information and ideas come in very handy when you most require it. Most importantly; don't over do. Be subtle; choose the right focal points and task areas and then mix well. This should lighten up the kitchen enough to get all your culinary tasks done in a jiffy.

NiCad, Lithium, and NiMH Batteries
Article Body:
Three main types of rechargeable batteries are used in newer technology hand held devices. Scientists are constantly trying to develop batteries with better technologies that make them faster, more powerful, and more lightweight. In the past, the only type of rechargeable battery available was a lead-acid battery, which contains liquid and must be kept ventilated in an upright position. Though still used in autos and motorcycles, scientists have developed gel-batteries, where the liquid is semi-solid and will not spill. These batteries, most commonly used in new had held devices are nickel-cadmium (NiCad), nickel metal-hydride (NiMH), and the newest, Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries.
Nickel Cadmium, or NiCad batteries are the least expensive of the three types, because it has the least power. They are primarily used in portable phones, power tools, and other hand held devices. They are more practical than lead-acid batteries because of their increased power and light weight. They also have an advantage over alkaline batteries which are not usually rechargeable. NiCad are said to be the number one sufferer of the “memory effect” which in fact is really a lazy battery effect, where the battery discharges quickly after being fully charged. A NiCad battery only lasts 1000 full cycles, so eventually they need to be replaced.
NiMh batteries are next of the podium for newer, more powerful batteries. Though similar to the NiCad batteries, NiMh batteries do not contain toxic cadmium, so they are considered more of an environmentally-friendly battery. They are also higher capacity than NiCad and are said not to suffer from the “memory-effect” quite as much. Following the proper steps for charging and discharging in NiMH batteries is very important. NiMh batteries need smart chargers which prevent them from over-charging. It is also important that they are not run flat in a portable device, which creates reverse charging, which can completely damage the battery. Most devices detect safe discharge voltage and shut down automatically. In this case, NiMH batteries are much more effective in high drainage devices like digital cameras, while NiCad batteries are more effective in devices with a fast discharge rate such as power tools. NiMH batteries are also used in hybrid cars.
The newest and most powerful of all rechargeable battery types is the Lithium Ion battery. When compared to NiCad and NiMh batteries, Li-Ion batteries have the highest voltage density and the lowest self-discharge rate. It is the smallest and most light-weight of all the batteries, but all the advantages make it much more expensive as well. New Li-Ion batteries are said to charge 10 times faster than NiMH or NiCad batteries, and does so in a fraction of the time. Li-Ion are extremely susceptible to high temperatures which can great shorten their lifetime. Extremely high temperatures can also cause a Li-Ion battery to explode.
Different types of batteries have their advantages and disadvantages. While some offer more convenience and higher capacity, there are still many limitations facing the development of batteries. However, battery technology is improving everyday to help portable devices last longer.
New iPod design for iPod Lovers
Article Body:
Apple recently updated its popular iPod music players making them thinner and adding great new features that make it worth considering an upgrade for old iPod users.
There are three iPod models -- 10, 15 and 30GB. The 15 and 30GB iPods $299 and include software for use with Windows or Macintosh systems.
The new iPods are about half as thick as the older ones, and there is a dock for the 15GB and 30GB models. Instead of connecting via a Firewire cable to charge the battery or download music, the new iPod slides easily into its rectangular dock, which is connected to a power source or to the computer.
The new controls are backlit and touch sensitive, which means there's no longer a spinning wheel that collects dirt. There's also a great new feature called the On-The-Go playlist. Previously, if you wanted to listen to a particular group of songs on the iPod, you had to make a playlist in the MusicMatch for Windows or iTunes for Macintosh software provided with the device. With the new On-The-Go feature, you can click on a song in the iPod and add it to the playlist without having to hook the iPod to a computer. The playlist is cleared when the iPod is connected to the computer.
The new iPod includes an alarm clock function, and new external sound means the alarm sounds even if the iPod isn't hooked to a stereo or headphones.
There are a lot of extras on the iPod. The equalizer is back with more presets to bring out details of your music. A calendar is available, and the notes feature lets you drag text notes and messages to the iPod when it's used by the computer as a hard drive. Contacts can also be added to the iPod using vcard-formatted contact information. There are new games to play, including solitaire.
The new iPod comes with features found on old iPods, such as earbud headphones that offer great sound and a sliding button on top that locks the controls. This keeps the iPod from accidentally being turned on.
As for the battery, the built-in device charges quickly and drains slowly. On average, I got about 6-7 hours of use out of the device on a single charge.
To complement the iPod, Apple has introduced the Music Store. The store offers songs for 99 cents each and some albums from several music genres. The only downside to the Music Store is its limited audience. For now, it's only available to Macintosh users with iTunes 4.
While there's room for slight improvement, the new design is impressive overall. The backlit control is great to have, even the On-The-Go playlist. The device offers great sound, whether through headphones or a full stereo system. The Music Store complements the iPods nicely, though it would be nice if Windows users could take advantage of the online song database. But at least Windows users have iPods.

Mobile Phones - Why Thin Is In And Bulky Is Out
Article Body:
Looking back at the past, mobile phones have had a big development and improvement. Gone are the days when people used bulky and large mobile phone devices which in the contrary to its size, only incorporated the basic and simple features. With the technology and trend, mobile phones have become sleek, slim, fashionable and sophisticated.
Mobile phones used to be big and bulky. The functions were just for making and taking calls. Nowadays, you can find lighter mobile phones with multiple features not to mention that the prices are getting down giving the buyers greater deals with the number of uses incorporated on the phone.
One great wonder thin mobile phones have is that with its small and sleek size, the user can actually listen to music, record videos or take pictures. Mobile phones nowadays are more than just a communication device. It’s more of life and excitement.
Why is bulky out? There are a number of reasons for this.
1. A bulky phone is annoying to carry. You can't just put your big mobile phone in your pocket and you wouldn't want to go around all the time carrying a bag or purse to place your mobile phone in.
2. Bulky phones are not fashionable and not sophisticated. The early phones do not come in different colors and designs. Although some bulky phones are now available in different colors, these phones still do not have the sense of fashion and elegance.
3. Most bulky phones do not have a carry around charger. They have a charging set that is impossible to take anywhere you go. One good thing about bulky phones is that they come with extra battery pack but some people do not feel comfortable changing their batteries especially when the mobile phone runs out of battery while in use. It is still more convenient to just plug in your mobile phone and continue with what you are doing.
4. Some bulky mobile phones do not have as much features as those slimmer ones. Although mobile phone manufacturers have come up with bulky phones with multiple features, bulky phones still have the connotation to people that these mobile phones are less powerful and less useful than the thin mobile phones.
5. Mobile phones are hand held devices. It means you can take it anywhere or have it with you even when you are busy of doing something. Thus, accidents are most likely to happen to your mobile phone when not taken care of. The impact of shock to bulky mobile phones is greater than thinner ones. This is because of the size and weight. Moreover, the greater the shock it gets, the harder to fix it.
Why is thin in? There are also many reasons for that.
1. Gone are the days for bulky mobile phones. Everywhere you go, you can see different styles and brands of slim and thin mobile phones. People know that the trend for mobile phones is focused on the thinner phones.
2. Thin mobile phones come in multiple features. These phones have camera, video recorder and voice recorder. These phones are also Wi-fi ready. It means that you can browse or surf the internet in any Wi-fi spot places.
3. The memory of thin mobiles phones is significantly higher than bulky mobile phones. Some thin mobile phones have now 8 gigabytes memory and some have even greater. Having a high memory enables the user to store different files such as audio files, video files, games and photos.
4. Some thin mobile phones are now enabled with computer features that allow the user to open and work on word documents, powerpoint files and excel files.
5. These days, thin mobile phones are easier to fix than the large mobile phones. Because thin is in, many manufacturers have come up with the spare parts that will be needed in case the mobile phone gets broken. Moreover, many mobile phone technicians have focused on their expertise in repairing the slim and small mobile phones.
6. Thin mobile phones are simply sleek, elegant and fashionable. They come in hundreds of designs and numbers of colors. One can choose from themes provided in the unit or simply download them from the internet. These phones are also loaded with ring tones and messaging features that the owner can choose from. Thin mobile phones also have casings that are changeable allowing the owner to constantly change from one to another. The owner may vary the color of the phone depending on the color of his shirt or bag.
The abovementioned are just some of the many reasons people go for thin mobile phones. With all the features and convenience a thin mobile phone can offer, it’s no wonder that nowadays, thin is in and bulky is out.

There are so many esoteric, eclectic electronic gadgets that it is difficult to separate the practical and purposeful from the frivolous and senseless. And when tastes and personal preferences are factored into the mix, it is not as simple as separating gold and tin into two discernible piles.
There are entire personal-communication systems that fit into mobile phones. Sunglasses and wristwatches now are multidimensional communications and entertainment products. Mobile phones not only serve as entertainment centers and GPS navigational systems, the units also are viewed as jewelry and complementing accessories to one's fashion persona.
Apparently, Baskin & Robbins was really onto something when it decided to offer as many flavors as possible and to treat each tasty twist with the same reverence usually reserved for vanilla and chocolate. B&R was among the first firms to grasp that true luxury embodies a wide berth of available options. If something is made well, it will appeal to consumers of discerning tastes. The marketplace for electronic gadgets and games is truly a phenomenon of the 21st century.
We eat blueberries and talk into BlackBerrys. It is difficult to say whether any gadgets or accessories will amaze and enthrall us like the abacus did the Babylonians back in 300 BCE. While, abaci, which are still in use today, have endured for centuries, the eras of eight-track tape players, rotary-dial telephones, and VCRs are already ancient history. Does anyone still remember when mobile phones were as large as one of Shaquille O'Neal's sneakers, or when television sets did not come with remote controls?
The ever-changing landscape of new electronic gadgets and games is a byproduct of modern technology that is evolving faster than ever. The Luxé Electronic Gadgets Review plugs into today's latest wizardry. However, do stay tuned for upgrades, enhancements, and new product introductions throughout the year.
When it comes to mobile phones with intelligence, the BlackBerry line is summa cum laude with its front-row bleeding-edge technology. After all, it is a handheld mobile phone that works like a multi-port personal computer. And if that isn't enough to prompt a wow from the galley, the new BlackBerry Pearl 8100 is smaller and sleeker than its magnificent predecessors. Aside from being a phone that allows international roaming between North America, Europe and Asia Pacific, it comes with multimedia capabilities and 64 MB of memory, which is easily expandable.
Wearable electronics sounds like something movie characters like Batman or James Bond might wear. Although the terminology possesses a futuristic, science-fiction tone, it accurately describes intelligently designed multiuse products, such as the O ROKR. The O ROKR is Oakley's fourth release of a pair of eyewear with a built-in mobile phone and an MP3 player. It is Bluetooth-driven eyewear. The O ROKR is a collaborative effort by Oakley and Motorola. The O ROKRs come in three distinct colors, and there are stylish versions of it for both men and women.
V-Moda presents "hearwear" that dazzles the eyes, perks the ears, and piques the interests of both fashion and music aficionados. The Modaphone Hearwear collection is a series of fashionable earphones with the sparkle of jewelry and the clarity of high-end earphones. There are four models. Each model is made from super-soft silicon with fittings that are offered in three sizes. The fabulous four are individually known as the Bass Fréq, the Vibe, the Remix M Class, and the Modawrap. The earphones are compatible complements to Apple's iPods, Microsoft's Zune, and various other MP3 players.
It is all in the numbers. Escort Radar manufactures the best radar/laser detectors, as the company owns over 85 percent of all radar and laser patents in use. Radar/laser detectors are legal to use in 49 states. Virginia and Washington, DC, are the only exceptions. With all the coupes, roadsters, sedans, and even SUVs capable of accelerating beyond 150 mph smoothly and effortlessly, it is easy to see how even the most responsible driver could err at a most inopportune time. Escort Radar's Passport 8500 X50 circumvents such mishaps from occurring.
Sony's S2 Sports Walkman MP3 Player is a fit gift for any athlete on the list. The two-gigabyte model stores up to 1,350 songs, and it plays up to 18 hours on an embedded battery that provides three hours on three-minute charge. It also contains an FM tuner for alternate listening choices to get through the workout time. The S2 is lightweight and has a bright, easy to read organic electroluminescence display.
It came as no surprise that when Motorola wanted to glitz out its RAZR V3i that a call was placed to the glamorous team of Domenico and Stefano to add the D and G magic. These guys could make cat litter glitter. So, ascending a streamline, renowned luxury cell phone to jewelry-level status would be a golden opportunity for them to leave another mark of distinction.
As long as the road is in North America, getting lost while driving will not happen if there is a StreetPilot in the vehicle. This GPS-satellite-navigational system, which is no larger than a baseball, is guaranteed to always pitch straight info to drivers. Plus it can easily be removed from one vehicle and placed in another, as it securely attaches to windshields with a suction cup. It is a perfect gift for the soon-to-be rich student, or an ideal addition to the classic car of a bygone era.
Having knowledge at your fingertips makes for a great metaphor. Having knowledgeable info conveyed instantly from an easy-to-use handheld device makes for a very innovative and entertaining product. The SkyScout by Celestron, with its advanced GPS technology, can be used during the day or night. Turn it on and its built-in menu provides operating info simple enough that even adults can operate it without muss of fuss.
When hip-hop, country or rock artists put out a song that has universal appeal beyond its anticipated audience, the hit song is a crossover. So, if a cell phone contains 140 grams of solid gold and is studded with diamonds, would it be a crossover into the jewelry marketplace as well as being a cell phone? There are so many people observed daily constantly holding cell phones against their ears. Many of these sleek machines could easily be mistaken for over-sized earrings. The Illusion, which is GoldVish's sparkling collection of personal luxury communication devices, is for real.
The Sony Ericsson Bluetooth Watch MBW-100 is a very practical, intelligent device that hits the underbelly of anyone who has ever imagined being a super sleuth or a suave secret agent like James Bond. The MBW-100 is a wristwatch with Bluetooth technology. When used with its wireless Bluetooth headset, the sophisticated wristwatch manages calls and music as simply as checking the time. This is a must-have for all lovers of bleeding-edge communications technology.
The thought of installing a telephone in one of the most intimate rooms in the house once left us bewildered, but this takes the cake. The iCarta dock from Atech Flash mounts easily onto the wall, charges your iPod while playing music, and features four integrated moisture-free speakers, which deliver exceptional clarity and high quality sound. The cost of replacing the NY Times for some Top 40 runs 100 dollars.
Since so many cell phones come equipped with MP3 capabilities, it only makes sense to make a dock designed with Bluetooth® Technology. The Altec Lansing T515 wireless speaker system features a speakerphone, a headset with a microphone, and a Bluetooth frequency up to 30 feet. Just a touch of a button allows you to easily switch from your favorite song to any incoming calls you receive.
The Altec Lansing T515 is priced at 150 dollars.

With this little device you can record interviews, meetings, lectures, lyrics, or even your grocery list. The MicroMemo is priced at 60 dollars.
Light Up Your Home While Keeping Energy Costs Down
Article Body:
According to ENERGY STAR®, if every American home replaced just five high-use light fixtures or the bulbs in them with ones that have earned the ENERGY STAR label, each family would save more than $60 every year in energy costs, and together keep more than one trillion pounds of greenhouse gases out of the air, which roughly equals the emissions of eight million cars.
ENERGY STAR-qualified compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) use 66 percent less energy than your standard incandescent light bulb and last up to 10 times longer. The Broan and NuTone Fluorescent Recessed Fan/Lights feature a 14-watt fluorescent bulb, making the product ENERGY STAR-qualified. For these same reasons, these models are California Title 24-compliant.
The Fluorescent Recessed Fan/Light is designed to coordinate with major lighting manufacturers' recessed light kits and can be placed in a series of recessed lights or on its own, blending seamlessly into your décor. In a bathroom, it helps control humidity and odor. In a kitchen or other high-traffic room, it helps keep air fresh and comfortable.
"So many of our customers have asked, 'Why didn't someone think of this before?'" says Patrick Nielsen, senior product manager for Broan-NuTone. "Not only does this product help them decrease energy costs, but it is stylish and can be used in almost any room in the home."
For bathrooms up to 100 square feet in area, the Home Ventilating Institute recommends an exhaust fan provide one cubic foot/minute (CFM) per square foot (approximately eight air changes per hour) for proper ventilation. The recessed fan/light exhausts 70 CFM of air and works inconspicuously, emitting just 1.5 Sones, less than half the noise volume of a traditional house fan. Ventilating products are measured in Sones, and one Sone roughly equals the sound of a quiet refrigerator when operating in a quiet kitchen. Working undercover, the recessed fan/light removes odor and humidity from bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms, closets and smoking rooms.
With this new product, homeowners can save time and money by installing two products at once, decreasing energy costs and providing less hassle and expense.

It Is All About The Perfect Toy
Article Body:
Some of the best toys I had when I was a kid werent really even toys at all. There was a large rock by the edge a stream that ran along the back of our house. That rock was a canoe during my Native American play, a stage when I needed an audience, a fishing boat, a car, a planet, and of course, a rock in the middle of Nestaria, my beautiful make believe world where fairies came to play with me. A long stick had some great potential as did the long breezy leaves of trees and cat tails. Those memories are ones nobody could have ever purchased for me, and of course, the initiation of growing my developing imagination has paid off even today in the form of my career. As perfect as those toys were for me, I dont think many children would get overly excited to wake up Christmas morning or their birthday to find a large rock wrapped in bulky paper topped with a special stick.
At the same time, when a child is ranting and wailing and making one of those lusciously embarrassing scenes in public because they have been told that horrible temper tantrum word, “No,†I often want to suggest giving the kid a big rock and a special stick simply so they can learn that they really dont need the momentary object of their tantrum. But in todays world parents who give their children rocks and sticks for special gift giving occasions arent considered very good parents.
So, what is a person with a child to buy for to do? We all know that there are mind numbing warnings out there about the overuse of electronic toys and video games. However, these mind numbing toys can actually teach kids a few things like persistence, problem solving skills, eye hand coordination, and with appropriate parental interference, self discipline. Electronic toys really only become terribly inappropriate when a parent realizes what an excellent baby sitter it can be and allows for its near constant use. However, before purchasing any type of game console beyond the educational type, if its not your child, be sure to talk to the parent first. Its not really fair to dangle an Xbox 360 in front of the child and then force the parent to become the bad guy when they disallow its use in the home. It can get messy. Communication can prevent messes.
As for the electronic education gadgets, of which there are numerous types, there has been a tremendous leap forward in electronic education. Someone finally figured out how to make them intoxicatingly fun for kids. The pay off for these types of toys can be tremendous, as kids learn so much from them while being tricked, since they truly feel they are playing a game. You should still breeze this idea before a childs parent before running out there and snagging up electronic toys, as some parents are still resistant to the idea.
Venturing back into my land of the stick and rock for a minute, what made those the best toys in the world was their versatility. They lasted for years because they could grow with me, change with me, at my own command. As my games changed, my “toys†could change with me. Some very smart toy makers have created a few of these toys for kids that resemble actual toys and less like bits of nature. Toys that have these qualities may only last two years, but at least there is still a growing aspect that allows a kid to develop at his or her own rate while playing the games and fantasies that they construct in their minds. This type of imaginative play is phenomenally important to healthy development and learning skills.
Despite the fact that children will tell you that the best toys are those that provide them with simple entertainment, the truth is (and some day they will look back and willingly admit this) the best toys are those that encourage them to use their imagination, to create, to ponder, and even to destroy. Learning to live in this world is difficult. Learning to create in this world is a blessing. To learn to create something from nearly nothing is a huge gift. The old favorites like Legos and Play-Do are of course excellent for younger children, while art supplies, building toys, and toys that encourage creative play are perfect for school aged kids. Without the use of their imaginations, we strip children of their brightest chances, and we strip society with what they may have one day created had their imaginations been encouraged to fester and create.
Is the Sony KDE-50XS955 50 Plasma Wega HDTV Television Worth It
Article Body:
Overall, the Sony KDE-50XS955 50 Plasma Wega HDTV television is one of the more expensive fifty-inch flat TVs on the market, retailing normally between four and five thousand dollars. However, this Sony Plasma HDTV TV backs up that price with enough features that you won't mind the price tag. The large size and high definition capability are just a few of those great features on the Sony KDE-50XS955 59 Plasma Wega HDTV television, with consumers rating it eight or night out of ten stars.
The 100 Watt Total output power combined with the SRS surround sound is much more than you would find on TVs in the same price range. With the high definition function, images are displayed that are more lifelike and much sharper than a standard TV, however, the source has to be high definition for this to hold true. To use this function, however, you will want to purchase a high definition receiver, sold separately.
Also included is a 3:2 pulldown feature. With this, the artifacts that can happen when movies are recorded onto a DVD. You will have a more flicker-free picture when playing the moved back, if you are using a progressive scan DVD in conjunction with this TV.
This Sony plasma HDTV has a screen resolution of 1366 x 768. The widescreen modes include full, zoom, normal and widescreen zoom, with picture-in-picture capability. Additional features include on-screen menu, MP3 playback, JPEG photo playback, MPEG1 movie playback, and digital reality creation multifunction.
Again, you can't do much better for this price and then the Sony KDE-50XS955 50 Plasma Wega HDTV television. With all these features, it more than backs up its price tag.
Ipod Nano Review
Article Body:
In this age of portable music, the iPod has downloaded itself into the public consciousness…where it won't be leaving any time soon. Not that we mind. Despite a large pool of reputable competitors, such as Sony and Dell, who manufacture their own slick mp3 gizmos, the iPod is still the most popular and best-selling of the bunch. Just think of buying an mp3 player, and I bet your knee-jerk reaction will at least be to consider, if not choose, the iPod.
When Apple Computers' CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the iPod Nano in San Francisco's Moscone Center, it immediately became known as the smallest member of the display-bearing iPod family line and successor to the iPod mini (the updated version of which was released a mere 7 months prior to the Nano). Compatible with both Mac and Windows-based computers, the iPod Nano comes in two colors, white and black. You also have your choice of a 2GB version ($199) or a 4GB version ($249), which is a bit steep given the fact that the iPod mini held the same price tag for the 4GB and 6GB models, respectively. The iPod Nano's storage drive is flashed-based, which means no moving parts inside (decreased wear-and-tear and breakage potential), higher durability, and no sound skips while jogging, biking, or stumbling home after happy hour. Given the increasing capacities and capabilities of flash drives, I wouldn't be surprised if some day Apple starts implementing this technology into more of its major products. But that's for another article.
The first thing one is likely to notice is that the Nano, as its name implies, is tiny. You have to actually hold one to see just how astonishingly small this device is, and my first thought was that the small pocket of my jeans might now finally serve a greater purpose. The Nano measures 3.5" long, 1.6" wide (smaller surface area than a credit card), and just .27" thick (thinner than a AAA battery). Sleek and serene, the Nano is characterized by the simple elegance familiar to Apple fans. Yes, it certainly is a gorgeous-looking little machine due in no small part to the shiny, thin layer of acrylic applied to its surface. But the downside to the finish is its susceptibility to scratching and/or fingerprints (especially on the black version of the Nano). Weighing in at only 1.5 ounces you could conceivably move the Nano across a flat surface by sneezing on it, though I don't recommended this for health reasons.
The main features: Like all other iPods, the Nano is primarily designed to play digitized music such as mp3 files. And like its relatives, the Nano excels when doing what it does best. According to my research, the Nano uses the same sound chip as the Mini, and as mentioned before, overall quality is excellent. The included earbuds do a decent job delivering the sound, though I would prefer higher-end headphones to take full advantage of the audio experience. Fiddling with the included equalizer settings also seems to make noticeable sound adjustments, so fickle sound connoisseurs may have something to smile at here.
Owners of previous iPods shouldn't have a problem navigating the interface, as selecting songs, play-lists, and the like using the touch-sensitive click-wheel is still as user-friendly as ever (but I hate leaving behind those darn fingerprints!). Setting up and connecting to iTunes on both Mac and Windows machines was smooth and straightforward as well. According to information available at Apple's website, the 2GB iPod Nano holds 500 songs while the 4GB version stores about 1,000, assuming that the average song is 4 minutes long and compressed at 128 kbps using AAC encoding. And like the larger iPods, the Nano recognizes songs encoded in the following formats: mp3, AAC (and protected AAC format from the iTunes Music Store), AIFF, and WAV.
Unlike the iPod mini, however, the Nano sports a color display as well as the same photo capabilities as the top-of-the-line iPod Photo. This might have been a "just because we can" idea cooked up by the engineers over in Cupertino, as I received some strange looks while sharing my latest photos on a screen that's barely the size of a postage stamp. But I admit it's a fun feature to be included on such a small device. Complete with the usual organization options, you are able to create slideshows (with music and transition effects) and categorize your pictures any way you want. The Nano recognizes images in the following formats: JPEG, GIF, PSD (Mac only), TIFF, BMP, and PNG. I'll take this time to note that the camera connector for the iPod Photo, used for transferring pictures directly from a digital still camera to the iPod Photo, will not work with the iPod Nano. Also, other current third party devices such as voice recorders and FM transmitters are not currently compatible with the Nano.
There are also features that exist exclusively on the iPod Nano, such as the World Clock function, which allows you to see the local time anywhere in the world. Once you select a region (or major international city), a clock will appear on the display. The clock graphic will darken or lighten depending on what time of day it is at the other region, which is handy for frequent travelers. Feel like prank calling your friends in Egypt at 3AM local time? The iPod Nano can help! (Of course, I do not condone this sort of behavior- use this feature to make sure you don't accidentally call your friends in Egypt at 3AM).
Other Nano-exclusive features include a screen lock and stopwatch. The screen lock allows you to create a 4-digit combination to prevent others from going through your music and photos. This would seem like an effective method of deterring would-be thieves (or nosy exes), but since I already have so many passwords and codes in my life to remember I can do without it. Besides, such a pricey gadget like the Nano should be kept in a safe place anyway. The stopwatch feature is pretty neat, and allows you to record your best lap times or to keep track of how long tech support puts you on hold.
Battery life: The iPod Nano claims 14 hours of music playback, though battery consumption increases when using the photo slideshow functions with music playing in the background. Charging via the included USB 2.0 cable, which connects to the dock connector on its underside, it takes the Nano about an hour and a half to reach 80% capacity, and 3 hours to achieve a full charge. At present, the iPod Nano is not firewire capable. In my research I've also learned that the Nano's battery appears to be permanently soldered into the unit, which leads me to question the feasibility (or even possibility) of future battery replacement. Information regarding this will be updated as it is found.
Included items:
- USB 2.0 cable (backwards compatible with USB 1.1). This connects via the dock
connector underneath the Nano. NOTE: Don't confuse the dock connector with the
dock itself. The iPod Nano dock is an accessory that costs an extra $29. Over USB 2.0,
the Nano transfers music at about 5 mb per second.
- iTunes software (Mac & PC)
- Earbud headpones: They're white, (even for the black iPod Nano).
PROS:
Great sound quality, easy to use, beautifully stylish, extremely lightweight, portable, and durable. Nice color display, handy extras such as photo viewing and international clocks. Flash memory design prevents skipping, integrates easily with iTunes. Mac and Windows compatible.
CONS:
High price for relatively small drive space (compared to other iPod models), lack of more advanced iPod features/support, no present firewire capability, surface smudges and scratches easily if not protected.
OVERALL:
Despite the relatively hefty price tag for its storage capacity, the new iPod Nano by Apple is certainly a cool device for most gotta-have-it gadget-philes and for those who just want a reliable, easy-to-use high quality mp3 player. If you want to play your favorite songs while relaxing or running, the Nano and its few extra functions will make you happy. Those who are big on more complex functions may be disappointed with the present lack of features available (no support for FM transmitter, camera connector, firewire, etc.). But its ease-of-use, intuitive interface, style, and quality make this a very difficult gizmo to resist.
4 stars out of 5
